Burnie Celebrates 74 years of paper making

It is my pleasure to promote this event on behalf of the sponsors.

For 74 Years The Pulp has been the dominant part of life and landscape of Burnie.

To honour the men and women who came from all along the North West Coast of Tasmania to work at the Pulp between 1937 and 2010

WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO DO?

From time to time Heli-Adventure Tasmania operate a helicopter here in Burnie when the Cruise ships are in port, weather permitting. After discussions with the owners, I agreed to post their website so that if you are in Launceston and are looking for something different to do, contact them and mention where you read or heard about them.

The Author's profile:

Perhaps before getting on to my life story you should read the main feature story titled "The 1992 dispute that stopped a city. ". (Click on the link will take you straight to it.) This story has crosslinks back to the current story on the planned closure of the paper industry in Burnie as of June 30th 2010.

Born: Wynyard, Tasmania 1938.

Early childhood: Raised on a farm at Forest (Circular Head, North West Tasmania) till 1947. My family then moved to Penguin December 1947.

Education: Forest area School, Penguin State School 1948-1950. Launceston Church Grammar School 1951- 1954.

Employment: Apprentice Diesel/Motor Mechanic, transferred to Fitting and Turning mid term at Associated Pulp & Paper Mills Ltd. Employed at paper mill from 1955 - 1993. From 1993 - 1995 employed by Silcar Maintenance services. From 1995 a series of employers, Skilled, Henry Walker Contracting, Australian Bulk Minerals, currently Simplot Australia and TPW Labour Hire as a casual Maintenance Fitter. For 55 years I had involvement one way or another with the industry that made its home in Burnie, Tasmania.
The period between August 1977 and 1993 I was Purchasing Officer & Stores Manager of Burnie Timber Group Sawmills and in 1991 transferred to APPM to become Senior Engineering Purchasing Officer.
The take over of stores and maintenance by Silcar Maintenance Services ended my direct involvement with the paper industry in May 1995 as an employee. Since that date I still returned as a casual maintenance fitter years after walking through the main gates 15th January 1955.

Mad? To some maybe, but I would rather be active than sit in a chair and wait to die. So what is left? Casual maintenace work at Simplot Australia's Ulverstone processing plant, maybe something will appear from labour hire firm TPW but who knows what the future has in store for this "Old Goat."

Service Club involvement: I first joined Lions Clubs International as a member of the Penguin Lions Club in 1963 and became Secretary in that year. Shift work in 1965 made it necessary to resign with regret. The opportunity again arose when my family moved to Burnie in 1984 and I was inducted again as a member of the City of Burnie Lions Club on the 15th August 1985. A Past President 1988-89, and then served for six years as a District 201T1 Cabinet member. In 2007 I was again invited to be a part of the District Governor's Cabinet and have continued in subsequent Cabinets since then, and it doesn't appear to be ending anytime soon.

Community involment: A volunteer at the then Burnie Online Access Centre, Burnie Visitor Information Centre, now known as the Makers' Workshop and numerous other organisations since moving to Burnie. I hold an appreciation Award from the City for 10,000 hours of voluntary service to the community along with a number of others thus recognised.
As one door closes, an other opens. Make the most of the opportunities that present themselves while you can.
